Evangelicals abandoning social conservatism
April 26, 2007 | 2 Comments
It seems that evangelicals are getting on the Rudy bandwagon, casting aside their social conservative views in favor of a decisive guy who’s supposedly right on national security issues. In the words of one Iowa voter quoted in the article linked above, “We have some differences, but he’s electable.” Ugh – electability, national security props – all of that is supposed to make me forget that he’s an amoral slimeball who claims to be Catholic while promoting behaviors that are decisively against our most holy faith? God help us all.

“He’s electable.”
Electability apparently covers over a multitude of sins. I’d even rather have Romney over Giuliani – he at least moved over to the pro-life side BEFORE he declared his candidacy…at the very least he has more respect for the IQ of the average Christian voter than Giuliani apparently does.
I think Giuliani is just the Republican version of Clinton – encourages the party to sell out its principles for the sake of getting elected. Which is fine if getting elected is all that matters, but what happens once he’s in? I don’t know if I can vote for him, even to vote against Obama or Clinton.
By the way, did you hear about the Archbishop of St. Louis?
Romney is definitely a step up from Giuliani, but still not ideal. I’m a bit nervous about the fact that he was pro-choice before he was pro-life, but I suspect he’d keep it together if he were to win the nomination.
Your comparison of Giuliani to Clinton seems appropriate, as well. And like you, I don’t think I could pull the lever for him, even to prevent Clinton and/or Obama from taking office. I’m going to pray long and hard about the proper course, though, and it may require holding my nose and voting for the Republican.
I’ve just read about Archbishop Burke on “The Curt Jester.” Praise God for bishops who exercise their episcopal duties seriously! May he serve the Church many, many more years as an example to all clergy!
